State Honors Patriot Guard Riders

The Patriot Guard Riders travel the state honoring fallen soldiers, and on Saturday, they were honored by the state.

Iowa - The Patriot Guard Riders ride hundreds of miles on their motorcycles to attend soldiers' funerals. They do it to protect families from controversial protestors.

On the front steps of the Capitol, lawmakers presented the riders with a copy of newly passed legislation that recognizes them for their commitment to the armed forces.

Dozens of riders took part in the ceremony that also focused on remembering Iowa's fallen soldiers.

"What I want to say to you from the bottom of our hearts all of us that serve in uniform is 'thank you.' What you do is amazing. You do it on your own time and dime and you are always there with us," said Lt. Col. Greg Hapgood of the Iowa National Guard.

"You deserve thanks for showing families that while you cannot take away their pain, you can endure it with them," said Patriot Guard Rider Steve Cox.

When the ceremony was over, the riders left the state Capitol and rode their bikes to Saylorville Lake.

The number of Patriot Guard Riders has really grown over the years. The group has about 80,000 members nationwide.
